My First Blog

For my first blog, this seems to be a pretty good experience so far. Setting up this blog was straight forward and simple to do. Blogger is definitely user friendly. With this being said, I definitely have a lot more to learn.  There are so many features that I know will make my blog worthwhile in the classroom. "Playing" with the tools and apps throughout this assignment will be valuable. I believe that using blogs within my classroom will take the mindset that I am learning as well as my students. Putting myself in their shoes will allow me to create meaningful blogging opportunities for everyone                       image:  http://www.planetwebsolution.com/blog/
and hopefully meet individual needs in the mean time.

I chose the image above to represent how I feel about blogging. It is another means of communication. I want to use blogging within my classroom as a way for my students to have a voice. Each conversation cloud reminds me of how important discussions are in math and how communication in solving problems is important. I definitely think that blogging can create a way for students to construction arguments in solving a problem and critique each other's work, thoughts and opinions.

Throughout the course of this assignment, I would like to find more ways to incorporate blogging in my math classroom. It is not as easy in math to begin discussions that lead to multiple answers or ideas. However, blogging will give students a good idea of how to discuss math effectively.

  1. Jeanette,
I feel like I am coming from a similar location as you are. This is my first attempt at blogging too. I accidentally started a blog on a different service and found it very confusing. Blogger was much nicer. I would think you may be able to use the blog as almost a peer tutoring site. Students could pose questions about the homework or a problem they did in class and another student could help to walk them through.

    1. Thanks for your suggestion about using blogs as a peer tutoring site. I think that is a great idea. Setting clear parameters about making so many comments to classmates can give all students well defined expectations. I think the most important piece would be for the teacher to focus the discussions and create opportunities for all students to participate even if they are unsure of how to help someone else. This could be a great way to create confidence in the more insecure students.

  2. Jeanette-

I like your attitude towards using blogs in the math subject. I tend to link blogs with writing and reading. But you are right about how blogs could lead to discussion and problem solving, which definitely link to math. One of our focuses when we plan for math is how to teach students to use math vocabulary to explain their math reasoning. Blogs could be one way to tie that in.

Good luck with how this works with your students!

I just posted my comment under my other blog, Active Handprint. Sorry! (Too many e-mail addresses for my own good!)

  4. Jeanette,

I think that keeping in mind you and your students are learning will give classroom blogging adventurous and exciting feelings that could be the hook to keep them coming back. I've had similar thoughts when I started a class website. To my surprise, most students were interested what I would share because they knew me in person and my classroom demeanor. To my surprise, the "Homework Page" was the most popular and students took turns posting the homework. A few of the assignment posts generated discussions about the content, which of course I was very happy to see. I taught social studies but I think that blogs and class websites can work with any content area and adaptable for students in all grades.

  5. Jeanette,

I love that you are willing and eager to learn alongside your students. Like you, I love the idea of creating math blogs to get students thinking and discussing multiple methods of solving a problem, sort of like an online "math talk." I also find that students constantly wonder how math will be useful in the real world. I would love to start some type of blog where students could upload images of math concepts from outside of school or post reflections on how they may have used math that day.
